Sports Betting Launches in Maryland

While in-person sports betting at local casinos and bingo halls has been legal in Maryland for a while, online sports betting has been slower to hit the market. However, in addition to these retail betting locations, Maryland bettors can expect the state to grant up to 60 online sports betting licenses by the end of 2022. 

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC), a temporary group responsible for license distribution to retail casinos and sportsbooks in Maryland, has been accepting applications for mobile sports betting for the past couple of months. 

In a press release, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said, “We know sports fans are eager to have mobile wagering, and we also know that it will substantially increase the contributions to education funding, so we’re eager too. We’ve been doing everything we can to have it launch before the end of the year, and now we have a good chance to make that happen.”
